Why should I use solar cover?

Solar covers can increase the temperature of your swimming pool by transmitting the warmth of the sun’s ray to the water.  The heat travels through the cover and is absorbed by the pool water, the cover prevents much of this heat from leaving the water, the result being a net gain in temperature of the pool water even without any additional heating.  If your pool is heated (and most are) it is even more important to use a solar cover as they reduce the amount of evaporation that occurs, thereby reducing the costs incurred in heating the pool as more of your heated water remains in the pool reducing the need to top up with cold water.  Reducing the amount of top-up water added could also reduce your chemical usage, again making running your pool more economical.  When solar covers are used at night this will help prevent a considerable amount of heat loss which occurs due to the cooler temperatures throughout the night.  All in all using a solar cover makes sense.

What is the correct way for the bubble cover be placed on the swimming pool?

Bubbles covers are placed on the pool with the bubbles downward to achieve an even insulation gap between the swimming pool water and the air above.

What is the average lifespan of a swimming pool cover?

When used in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations, a swimming pool cover should have a lifespan of 4 to 5 years.  You may want to consider using a cover roller system.  These will aid you to remove and replace you pool cover.  By using a roller system you may increase the lifespan of your cover as it is less likely to get damaged by persons pulling and tugging at it to remove it from the pool.  The roller also stores the cover neatly at the end of the pool whilst you are swimming.  Roller covers are also available in blue, green and white to protect your cover whilst on the roller.

My swimming pool pump basket is full of little blue plastic circles which look like contact lenses what are they and what should I do?

These blue circles are from your bubble cover and they indicate that it needs replacing.  This is quite normal when covers are getting old.

It is possible to slow down the aging process of your cover.  Covering the summer cover with a white plastic sheet when it is on the side of the swimming pool will help prevent the suns rays breaking down the plastic.  Another thing to bear in mind is when you super-chlorinate the swimming pool, do not put the cover back on immediately, and wait until the chlorine level is back down to a normal level. This will reduce the risk of the high levels of chlorine bleaching and hardening the cover, making it brittle.

I have an indoor pool, do I need a cover?

Indoor pools are usually heated and also need to be covered when not in use, although a different kind of cover is used.  A solar cover would not be used as there is little or no solar gain inside.  In this instance you would need a heat retention cover.  An indoor pool would have the same routes of heat loss from your pool water as an outdoor pool.  As with the solar cover the reduction in water loss due to evaporation will again reduce the need to top-up the pool with cold water reducing your heating costs and possibly your chemical usage.  In indoor pools, evaporation can also have damaging effects on any furniture and furnishings that are around your pool.
